The quality of make-up and boiler water directly affects the reliability and lifespan of expensive thermal power equipment — water treatment here isn't optional, it's part of the process.

Protecting boiler equipment

Scale and deposits on heat-transfer surfaces reduce heat transfer efficiency and cause local metal overheating, shortening the boiler's lifespan.

Double-Pass Reverse Osmosis + EDI

Removes
Multi-stage desalination plants combining double-pass RO with Electrodeionization (EDI) for continuous production of ultrapure boiler feed water without hazardous chemicals.
Equipment
Capacity: 5–50 m³/h

Reverse osmosis

  • Removes most dissolved salts before final polishing, cutting chemical use at later stages
  • Stable, predictable result regardless of source water composition
  • Needs thorough pretreatment — sensitive to fouling and membrane scaling
  • Produces a concentrate stream that has to be discharged somewhere

Ion exchange

  • Can reach very low conductivity and silica levels
  • Lower capital cost compared to EDI
  • Needs regular acid/caustic regeneration — consumables and manual operations
  • Reagent storage and neutralizing regeneration wastewater add extra site burden

Electrodeionization (EDI)

  • Continuous operation without chemical regeneration — consistently high water purity
  • Less manual labor to operate compared to ion exchange
  • Higher upfront capital cost
  • Sensitive to inlet scaling and fouling — needs reverse osmosis as a pretreatment stage

When this solution isn't needed

If the boiler runs mostly on a closed steam-condensate loop with minimal make-up water, and the manufacturer doesn't set strict conductivity or silica limits, a full RO/EDI line can be excessive — basic softening is often enough. The final decision depends on the boiler's pressure class and the actual make-up water balance, so it should start with a technical audit, not equipment picked in advance.
